There's nothing like a winter camping escape in Tasmania. We packed up the swags, the gazebo and the camp stove and headed off to the Tasman Peninsula for a few days in July. Our destination was Fortescue Bay in the Tasman National Park.
The Mill Creek campsite was spacious and we had it to ourselves - one of the many benefits of camping outside the peak season. The bay itself is spectacular, with the forest meeting the sea in a large sweep of calm water with a spectacular headland jutting out into the southern ocean. Plenty of wildlife and birds to look at and listen to. Fortescue Bay marks the final destination for the relatively new Three Capes Track after a 4-day hiking journey. There are plenty of short walks on offer as well, including to Cape Hauy, Canoe Bay and Bivouac Bay.
There are great facilities available at the Banksia campsite where walkers can refresh themselves in clean, modern showers and relax at the end of their trek.
