Named after a pioneer family in the 1800's this region of central north-west Tasmania has a lot to offer. Green rolling hills, mountains, lakes, local artisans, specialist food producers and lots of contented cows!
Mount Roland and Lake Barrington
The majestic Mount Roland dominates the landscape. Standing at 1233m above sea level, it provides a stunning backdrop to the whole region. Lake Barrington, a 20km long artificial lake built on the Forth River stands to the west of the mountain and provides a range of fabulous recreational opportunities. The lake is also the site of a world-standard rowing course and has hosted some major national and international tournaments.
Sheffield Murals
The lovely farming town of Sheffield has been revitalised by the creation of an outdoor art gallery that depicts the region in its earlier days. My favourite is the Tasmanian Tiger facing off the Tasmanian Devil with Mount Roland in the background. I think the Devil won that contest...
The Lakes
To the south and west of the Kentish Municipality are the magnificent great lakes of Tasmania. Pine Lake in the highlands offers an opportunity to see one of Tasmania's rarest trees - the Tasmanian Pencil Pine. The colours are magnificent. The great lakes provide a haven for water-birds and are a favourite destination for keen fisherman seeking the elusive trout.
