The Aussie Odyssey begins

Whilst we haven't picked up our camper trailer yet, the first part of our odyssey is to visit family and friends in NSW and ACT before touring north-west Tasmania.

Top of Tassie

After travelling up the Bass Highway before boarding the Spirit of Tasmania, we visited the various bays and inlets along the Tamar Valley and the beautiful Narawntapu National Park. Lots of kangaroos grazing peacefully on the open grassland. What a nice start to our trip! We'll be back to spend some more time in this lovely spot.

The Crossing

An overnight crossing on the Spirit of Tasmania is the way to go. We had a very smooth crossing and arrived to watch the sunrise over Port Phillip Bay. Welcome to the north island of Australia!

The Golden Highway

A sea of vivid golden yellow greeted us as we headed north through regional Victoria to our overnight destination at Narrandera in NSW. A member of the Brassicaceae family that includes cabbage and broccoli, canola is a very popular crop in these parts. Its distinctive, bright yellow flower is a wonderful sight as you cruise through the countryside. The seed is used to make edible oils.

Another feature of the drive north was the amount of water that is still lying around after the recent heavy rains and floods. All the creeks are full and the roads are pot-holed and damaged. It certainly is a land of extremes.

The Murrumbidgee

Narrandera on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River was our overnight destination. What a lovely town! With a bit of help from the friendly locals, we were able to spot a koala on the Bundidgerry Walking Track that hugs the river. The whole area has been flooded and the River Red Gums look magnificent in their watery paradise. After suffering habitat loss and other issues, the koala all but disappeared from Narrandera from 1900 to 1972. Thankfully, the Council had the foresight to create a special reserve and they were re-introduced to the area after 1972. The area is now colonised by upward of 200 healthy koalas.
